Shoe dupes that are comfortable, not just cute
Shoes are worn hard, so a dupe has to do more than look right in a photo. How a shoe is built decides how comfortable it is, how long it lasts and whether it can be repaired.
How the sole is attached
Most affordable shoes are cemented, meaning the sole is glued on. That's fine for sneakers and fashion pairs, but they usually can't be resoled. Blake-stitched shoes have the sole stitched through to the insole, giving a sleek profile that a cobbler can resole. Goodyear-welted shoes are the sturdiest and most repairable, and are rarely found at dupe prices.
Uppers and linings
Leather uppers stretch and mould to your foot; synthetic uppers keep their shape but don't breathe as well and may never fully soften. A leather or textile lining makes a big difference to comfort, since plastic linings trap heat and moisture. For suede, a protective spray before the first wear helps a lower-priced pair last.
Comfort details
Look for a cushioned or removable insole, a heel counter that holds your heel firmly, and a sole with real grip. Very thin, hard outsoles are a common shortcut in cheap fashion shoes, and you'll feel them by the end of the day.
Getting the size right
Sizing varies a lot between brands, especially across US, UK and EU sizes.
- Use the brand's size chart and measure your foot length in centimetres or inches.
- Check reviews for "runs narrow" or "size up".
- Try new shoes on carpet first so you can still return them.
- Confirm the return window and who pays return shipping.
