Accessories dupes: jewelry, sunglasses, belts and scarves
Accessories are an easy, low-risk way to get a high-end look. A few material and safety details separate pieces that last from ones that tarnish, irritate your skin or don't protect your eyes.
Jewelry: what the metal labels mean
Solid gold and sterling silver are the most durable. Gold vermeil, as defined in the US, is sterling silver with a gold layer of at least 10 karat and a set minimum thickness, so it lasts much longer than ordinary plating. Gold-plated and gold-tone pieces have a thin layer over base metal and can wear through with daily use.
If you have sensitive skin, look for nickel-free, hypoallergenic or surgical stainless steel, titanium or sterling silver pieces. Stainless steel with a PVD gold finish is a durable, affordable option for everyday wear.
Sunglasses: protection matters more than the logo
Make sure lenses are labelled UV400 or "100% UV protection", which means they block UVA and UVB light. Dark lenses without UV protection can be worse than none, because your pupils open wider behind them. Polarised lenses cut glare from water and roads, which is a comfort bonus rather than a safety requirement.
For the look, compare frame shape, size (lens width and bridge measurements are usually printed inside the arm) and material. Acetate frames feel more substantial than thin injected plastic.
Belts and scarves
For belts, full-grain leather and a solid metal buckle are what make a belt last; bonded leather tends to crack and peel along the holes. For scarves, check the fibre: silk, wool and cashmere feel and drape very differently from polyester and acrylic, though good-quality synthetics can be a sensible, easy-care choice.
Quick checks
Before you buy an accessory dupe:
- Jewelry: metal and plating type stated clearly, and nickel-free if you need it.
- Sunglasses: UV400 or 100% UV protection on the label.
- No other brand's logo or monogram on the piece.
- Reviews mention how it looks after a few weeks of wear.
